People are becoming increasingly interested in the environment and the effects of their and others’ actions upon it. These concerns can influence where they choose to stay, and they are more likely to choose hotels that use sustainable, eco-friendly practices. The hospitality industry must keep this in mind to ensure guests continue to stay at hotels and not look for other, more economically friendly, options.

What Is Sustainable Tourism, and Why Is It Important?

Sustainable tourism is an environmentally-friendly approach to tourism. It seeks to minimize negative effects on the environment while utilizing sustainable practices that responsibly use resources so that they are not destroyed or damaged. Sustainability brings a long-term perspective to tourist destinations, making sure they will be around for future generations to enjoy.

Why is sustainable tourism important for the hospitality industry? Sergio Alvarez of the University of Central Florida’s Rosen College of Hospitality Management explains the reasons very clearly: “All tourism relies on the natural and cultural resources that attract tourists and act as the main driver of growth and development in the tourism economy. All [destinations] share one thing in common: the attractions that make them world-class destinations are threatened by human activity, and in many cases, tourism itself is a main threat to these attractions.”

There is an increasing importance being placed on sound sustainable environmental practices by the general population, but this is especially true of millennials and Generation Z. These younger customers are vital to any hotel wanting to attract a steady stream of guests. Surveys have indicated that these groups are willing to spend more money to support businesses that share their concerns over the environment. This attitude is beginning to cross age barriers, as well. Older consumers are now agreeing with millennials and Gen Z about paying higher costs to stay at hotels using sustainable practices.

The Benefits of Sustainable Tourism

Sustainable tourism can be a great benefit to anyone in the hospitality industry. As mentioned, it can help to attract more guests to an establishment and provide good overall public relations. But there are other tangible benefits of sustainable practices.

Government at the local, state, and federal levels often offer many incentives for adopting environmentally positive practices. These can come in various forms, from tax breaks and grants for changing over to renewable energy sources to discounts on insurance premiums. These benefits vary depending upon the type of business and its location, but there are enough possibilities that any hospitality business will reap rewards.

The biggest obstacle to converting to renewable energy sources and other green technologies is the initial investment. Depending on the type and size of the property, conversion can be a major expense. The trade-off is that it will pay off in the longer term, both in terms of actual dollars saved as well as the good press garnered from being seen as environmentally conscious.

Sustainable practices are appreciated by the local communities as well as travelers. Anyone living in an area with high tourism wants it to be as clean and safe as possible. Many destinations rely upon the tourism industry for employment and economic health. Keeping the location in top condition ensures that the flow of tourists will continue.

There are also social benefits to be had from sustainability. Some areas feature attractions related to indigenous or native peoples. Businesses preserving the integrity and authenticity of these sites will foster better relations with the locals.

Adopting a sustainable culture can help to attract entirely new categories of guests. Many people are interested in supporting environmentally friendly businesses, but often they don’t know which ones are. Focused marketing campaigns emphasizing the level of commitment to sustainability can reach these potential customers. So can sponsoring environmental charities and initiatives, both locally and nationally. Any hotel that is known for its environmental stewardship will attract the attention of not only individuals but environmental organizations, too. These organizations will spread the word and can even become partners in offering deals to their members on trips to the area.

Environmental awareness has become increasingly widespread, and as that has happened more and more, people are looking to support businesses that share their concerns. All businesses in the hospitality industry can benefit from being a part of the sustainability movement.
